Acupuncture, in combination with Chinese Herbs, have been applied to help with different types of diseases related to eye, ear, nose, and throat, including but not limited to the following.
Acute conjunctivitis is a common disease of external eye dut to the bacteria or virus infection. It usually appears in the spring and summer, and is infectious or epidemic. The clinical presentations are significant congestion of conjunctiva, with mucous or purulent secretion. It is apt to the fulminant epidemic. This disease belongs to the category of eye disease due to wind-heat pathogens in Chinese Medicine, such as terms of “pseudo membranous conjunctivitis”, “epidemic red-hot eye” and “epidemic keratoconjunctivitis”, and popularly referred to “red-eye” or “fire-eye”. It is mostly caused by the contraction of exogenous wind-heat and seasonal virulent factors, leading to the obstruction of meridians, and by stagnancy fire; or by excessive fire in the liver and lung, disturbing upward along the meridians, attacking the eyes.
Aural vertigo, also called Meniere’s disease. It is a kind of non-inflammatory disease due to dysfunction of vestibule and retention of fluid in the membranous labyrinth. This disease is manifested by dizziness and dim eyesight, revolving and overturning of vision, inability to sit or stand, nausea, vomiting and sweating, accompanied by undulatory deafness and tinnitus of single side as well as spontaneous and horizontal talantropia. This disease belongs to the category of “dizziness” in Chinese Medicine, which is due to deficiency of the spleen and stomach, hyperactivity of liver yang, up-stirring of wind-yang, as well as wind, fire and phlegm attacking the upper orifices; or due to deficiency of yin essence, qi and blood, leading to malnutrition of the orifices.
Nasosinusitis, one of the common diseases in the department of eye, ear, nose and throat, is a inflammation of the nasosinusal mucous. Clinically, it is divided into two types: acute and chronic nasosinusitis. Usually chronic nasosonusitis is more common. This disease is manifested by profuse and turbid discharge from the nose, accompanied by nasal obstruction, headache or dizziness, and hyposmia. It belongs to the category of “nasal sinusitis” in Chinese Medicine, which is caused by the invasion of exogenous cold-heat into the lung, leading to the obstruction of lung qi with evil qi attacking the upper area and accumulating in the nasal cavity; or by failure of qi and blood to nourish the nose due to insufficiency of the spleen and lung.
Rhinallergosis, also known as allergic rhinitis, refers to the allergic reaction of the nasal mucous due to excessive sensitivity of the body to a certain sensitinogen. It usually occurs all year round or in a certain reason. The former is more common and often seen in young people. This disease is mainly manifested by paroxysmal nasal pruritus, frequent sneezing, nasal obstruction and thin discharge. It belongs to the category of “allergic rhinitis” in Chinese Medicine, usually caused by deficiency of yang qi of the lung, spleen and kidney; weakness of deficiency qi and invasion of pathogenic wind-cold into the nasal cavity, leading to conflict between vital qi and evil qi, hence unsmooth flow of lung qi with obstruction of the nasal cavity.
Acute laryngopharyngitis refers to the acute inflammation of the throat, encountered in the precursory symptom of some acute infectious diseases and usually occurring in the winter and spring. This disease is marked by sore throat, burning sensation in the throat, redness and swelling of laryngeal mucus. It is similar to the conception of “acute throat obstruction”, also known as “throat obstruction due to wind-heat” in Chinese Medicine. It is usually caused by sudden changes of weather and weakness of deficiency qi, leading to invasion of pathogenic wind-heat into the lung meridian, attacking the upper region along the meridians and retention of pathogenic wind-heat in the throat.
